Writing Introductions

***Reminder: Due on Wed., June 27, is the final copy of "Am I an Active Learner?"
Today each person was assigned two mini-lesson topics. Please find out what the rule is for your topic and create 2-3 sentences showing examples of correct usage. You can take one sentence from your Diagnostic essay and show us how to correct it. Here is the link to our webpage that connects to other writing centres for information on the topics: FAL Writing Links . Do not copy information from these sites -- please explain the rules in your own words. Bring these to class on Wed.
Today we also wrote introductions from the key points in the middle of the "hydrogen car" essay. Please rewrite the introduction and e-mail to to Sue by Tuesday night.

Blog Question.
Thinking about introductions, tell the class about your favorite movie.

Answer.

Our current class topic was on the role and structure of introduction in an essay. That motivated me to understand this blog question as though I need to show the role of introduction on the example of some film. I chose to shortly analyze introductions of three famous films. First two are perhaps known just to Russian speaking audience. The third one is known to the world. My thesis is that in spite of the differences, all of those introductions contain description of time and place, depicting the peculiarities of an epoch and inviting a spectator to lodge comfortably in that context. From this starting point they start developing the content.

The first film “Маленькая Вера” or “Little Vera”, directed by Vasili Pichul, starts by showing landscapes of Ukrainian sea port city of 80’s. Such was epoch of my youth: we hear popular pop songs of that time, see characteristic lifestyle elements and recognize so familiar pre-reconstruction years of former USSR. From here we are ready to follow the plot.

The second film is “Собачье сердце” or “Heart of a Dog”, directed by Vladimir Bortko by the plot of same named Michail Bulgakov’s novel. In the beginning we hear familiar tone of proletarian songs and juicy speech stamps, see ruined buildings and not yet fully transformed lifestyles of tsarist Russia in 1920’s. Thus the author unfolds the dawn of communist era, and the spectator like myself, that had chance to behold just a tip of a tail of that era, is ready to travel back to its roots. Having presented this undecorated realistic context, the author starts showing fantastic component of his plot.

Finally, “Goodfellas”, nominated to be the best film of Martin Scorsese, starts by depicting NY of 1970’s. Just as “Heart of a Dog”, this film goes along main hero’s narrative that begins, "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster." At this point I identify myself with the hero and feel as if being at that time and place.

The thesis of introduction serving the purpose of placing the audience within specific context may be more characteristic of just a film, but also translates to writing, that our FAL course is about.

P.S. Now I realize I might have misunderstood the role of introduction topic in the question. It probably means to introduce the film to the audience, so that this posting can be a beginning of some essay analyzing the film in more details. I leave it like this anyways because I partly completed this task as well.

My favorite movie is Cast Away. The movie is about a postal worker who fights for survival on a remote island after a plane crash. The postal worker’s name is Chuck Noland. In the island, he has to learn how to set a fire, get food, and find a place to live. One scene of the movie is really vivid which is Chuck tries to removed a carious tooth by striking hard the back of the hammer to his tooth. From the beginning Chuck is a fat person but at the end (3 years later), he becomes slim. He tries very hard to leave the island in order to meet his girlfriend. Although at the end he successfully returns to his country, his girlfriend is already married to another person and has her own children. After watching the movie, I am upset. However, I believe the storyline is fantastic and Tom Hanks plays Chuck Noland so well.

My favorite movie is called "The day afte tommorow." It is a movie showing us the future if we dont protect our environment now. It shows us what the world would be like if we continue to destroy and polluting our nature. It is a very good movie teaching us how important our environment is.

As technology and quality of living fast improved, movies have become an indivisible part of nowadays people’s lives. Even though people may not have chance to watch all the movies in the theaters, they will still watch them by renting DVD or even watch them on TV. Among those movies I have ever seen, the movie,”CLICLK” impressed me the most.
