Writing for different audiences
For Monday, please find examples of three kinds of writing and do a text analysis for each. Bring them to class so we can share our ideas.
For instructions on how to find academic journals online through the SFU library, please go to our class website and look at "Class notes" and scroll down to Class Nine. http://www.sfu.ca/~smbarber/falclass.htm
Our first "Mini-lesson" is also online with links to University websites and their Writing Centres. http://www.sfu.ca/~smbarber/mini-les.htm

Three types of writing I did in other courses were essays, poems, and storys. I think poems is most difficult to write because I have to follow different poetry rules and express my ideas in few lines. So, I need to learn more vocabs in order to choose the correct words to express my thoughts.
three types of writing I have to do in My other courses are long length essay, short essay, and a paragraph writting.
The most difficualt to write is long length essay as 1500 words essay. Teacher may give me some times to work on.Even though, I need to find lots of information from books and website and reference it every single time I use the information. When it becomes long and long, there will be more mis spelling and grammber errors.
Three types of writing I have to do in other courses are technical writing, essay writing, and short-paragraph writing. I found that technical writing, such as case study, scientific report, user manual, or troubleshooting guide, is most difficult to write. Because I will not only take care of spelling mistakes, grammar errors, and style format but also translate technical ideas into words that the intended audience will understand.
Three types of writing i did in other courses were journal, essay and poem. I found essay writing is the most difficult because a good essay contains tons of details and I usually fail to do so. Sometimes it takes me a whole day to write an essay. When I am writing in class, I usually have not enough time, therefore I tend to rush at the end.
In other classes I have written many essays, short paragraphs and stories. I find that they all come with there challenges with essays it is how formal it is and having to get all the punctuation correct. With short paragraphs it is trying to condense all your ideas into one paragraph, with stories sometimes it is trying to come up with an idea or a storyline.
The three types of writings I did in class are research paper, academic essay, and summary. Writing research paper is what I find the most challenging because not only do I need to understand informations from various research articles, but I also have to generalized the ideas in my own words. As well, sometimes it is complicated to control the length and most of the time I wrote more than the required number of words.
I did academic essays and business letters before. Both of them were kind of difficult in some ways for me. For academic essays, I have to come up lots of academic vocabularies instead of using the casaul terms. On the other hand, business letters required brief and concise expression and cannot be written in those difficult words in order to be understood by everyoone. Therefore, I guess I have to learn how to write according to each kind of writing needs.
three types of writing I have to do in my other courses are poems, essay writing, and research essays. I found the most difficult is research essays because they are always very long in lengths, most of them are over 1000 words. So it is hard for me. Also, research essays require researching plus essays, so they are much harder than just normal essays.
Question.
List three types of writing you have to do in your other courses. Which type of writing is most difficult and why?
Answer.
I would like to extend the question and to list all major types of writing I experienced for last years.
1. Fine writing. I wrote and many items of poetry, translations and essay, mostly in Russian. Some of them I published on different literature web sites, some just hand written in note books. Most of them I exposed for reading. Here I include my diaries. Some of them are also published.
2. Academic course writing. In my youth student years I wrote some technical reports and researches. Now in SFU I wrote several group and individual research papers on business subjects.
3. Scientific publication. 15 years ago I wrote my Master’s thesis along with scientific journal publications. All of them are in Russian. One is self-translated into English.
4. Business correspondence. I work part-time for software company as a remote sales representative. Therefore I write persuasive, descriptive, proposal, scheduling and other emails. Most of them are kept in my database. I also assist my son in business correspondence related to his dance career.
5. Technical writing. For the aforesaid company I once engaged in assistance of writing the manual and its translation into English. Here I supported myself with proof-reading of experienced professionals.
6. Personal correspondence. I write several emails a day to my friends and relatives. Before I did it in paper.
7. Newspaper article. Several times in my life I wrote for local newspapers in Russian.
It is hard to say which type of writing is the most difficult. Potentially fine writing may be the most demanding since it has the highest potential for development. But it can also go very pleasantly and naturally. It is easier to judge about concrete examples. I remember several occurrences of difficulty and stress. For instance in recent group projects when the task was unclear, the time - pressing, the group - divergent and the language – foreign. So to me the difficulty comes rather from the level of requirements and the favor of circumstances than from the genre or type.
