Formal and Informal Style
Please have a good look at the papers I returned to you today, especially the Diagnostic writing task results. The rewrite of the Diagnostic essay is due Wed., June 20th.
Note the reading for homework (Murray/Giltrow). Prepare short answers on the Giltrow exercises for discussion in class.
Today's blog question: Do you have a website? Use MSN? Send a lot of e-mail? Who do you mostly write to? Do you think using poor writing styles/abbreviations /slang/symbols for the majority of the writing you do is bad for your overall writing? Argue a position in ONE paragraph.

I use alot of MSN messenger and I send a fair amount of emails. When writing or sending an instant message to a freind I notice I use alot of slang because thats what everyone uses on MSN messenger! I think only once in my life I have seen a person come and message me using correct grammer. It was almost scary! In emails, I try to use correct English. I send so many that it just becomes very short and sweet usinag alot of abbreviations.
I know writing in slang and using abreviations is bad for my overall writing. I have become so immuned to writing in slang that I some times can't even tell what is proper English!
I think its a test of not being lazy and start using proper English when sending Emails and playing on MSN Messenger!
I don't chat online very often these days, but I write email and discuss some topics online everyday. It depends on who I am writing to, then I will use different styles of writing. Sometime, I feel "weird" when using correct grammar to write to close friends. However, mostly I use correct grammar so that others can understand clearly what I'm writing. I do believe that using poor writing styles/abbreviations /slang/symbols for the majority of the writing I do is bad for my overall writing. Because when using poor writing style often, he or she may assumes that style is proper English.
I use MSN everyday and I fairly send emails to friends since we all use msn. I use lots of slang and abbreviations on chatting because they are fast and easy. But I don't think it's bad because I have two versions of writing in my brain, and I can separate them clearly. One is for normal chatting and one is for formal writing. So I can do it since the slang and abbreviations can't influence me that much~~

Answer.
I have no website, but I have MSN, ISQ and I send considerable volume of e-mail daily. I mostly write for my relatives regarding administrative issues of my son’s dance career that I assist. I also write to administrators and other stakeholders of my son’s career. The clients of my part-time software sales job constitute next category of my correspondents. Lastly, I write to my friends. Approximately 50% of this correspondence is held in Russian and the remaining half – in English. Rarely do I write in Ukrainian. In all emails I try to be grammatical and clean, though not always formal. Even though I use very few abbreviations and slang, and my punctuation tends to be proper, my stylistic expressions are usually light and colloquial. In chat tools I allow myself to be less grammatical, and for instance, may not capitalize first letter of a short sentence. Of course, being slack in correspondence may lead to overall lingual degradation. When I have chance to see posthumously published diaries of famous people, I adore their high standards of informal writing. It encourages me to follow those role models. Indeed I believe that one can write in easy and brave manner, remaining in proper grammatical framework.

Getting used to the life with Internet, I simply cannot live without the instant message software. I chat and keep in touch with my friends in Canada and classmates back in Taiwan with MSN, SKYPE, or even sometimes YAHOO messenger. Those online chatting software replace the role played by traditional telephone. On the other hand, if there is a formal document or important message needed to be sent, I will choose to use the E-mail.
Most of the time, I use slang and abbreviations when I chat online. Using slang and abbreviation seems to bring friends close and makes typing easier. But when I type an e-mail, I will tend to use formal English and be aware of what vocabularies I choose. At the mean time, I have also noticed that become accustomed to using abbreviations and slang help me, as a non-native speaker to know more about the English usages and the English culture. Yet, this habit would affect my overall writing since sometimes when I work on a formal essay, I will tend to use the abbreviations and slang instead of formal usages.
I always use MSN to chat with my friends and I do not use formal english in our conversations. I think using poor writing styles will not affect my overall writing, because it is easy to seperate the two kinds of writings. Chatting with MSN is like speaking and communicating with friends, but writing essay and paragraphs are expressing ideas with words. They are two different styles of writing. So, it will not affect my overall writing because I am clear of what style of writing I need in different writings.

I use msn messenger to talk my friends. I send alot of emails to people. They do not actually use slangs because people do not use slang on their bussiness work. I play an online game. In the game, a lot of people use slang. Using slang is quick. Even though slang is kind of hard to understad,if someone who not used to it will struggle with it.
Im trying to write proper language when I write.

I have no website and I barely send e-mail. I used MSN a lot in the past, however I do not use it as much now a days. In the past, I usually wrote for my friends. I believe using poor writing styles, abbreviations, slang and symbols do not affect my overall writings. What affects my writings is the easy vocabularies I used. I used many easy vocabularies when I am using MSN because I don't have to think as much.
I use a lot of MSN messanger and I send a hugh amount of emails. When writing a message or an email to a friend. I use a lot of slang and symbols because this is the common language for the teenager today.I only using correct grammar when I send message or note to my teacher.I know using in slang and using symbols is bad for my formal writing. I start to forget the grammar and spelling when I need to use the formal formet for my paper or homework.
I think we start using proper English at all time; becuase, this will help you practice about your proper writing skill.
I use MSN a lot and write any Emails. I find that the slang or abbreviations is not what are affecting my work but the lack of punctuation. I find that because MSN is a flowing conversation no one ever uses periods or semi colons. Emails are not as bad because people tend to edit their emails and use a little better punctuation and proper English. I think that MSN has weakened my writing skills in some ways but not in others. I find that because of MSN I have looked up many words because I did not know how to spell them. Unfortunately with my spelling improving my punctuation is suffering.

I don't have a website, but i do use MSN. However i dont really like to send Emails, but when chatting with friends on MSN i use alot of slang and symbols. When i got used to the slang and symbols i sometimes miss used them in a formal writting. So i think it really influences me.
I had a website two years ago about my tee shirts. However, for some reasons, I closed it. I use MSN every times I turn on my computer. Although I do not chat that much, I still log on. I send several emails to my family members and my friends in Hong Kong for a week. In my emails to my family, I seldom use abbreviations and slang. However, for those I write for my friends, I use lots abbreviations and slang. Using abbreviation and slang sometimes interfere with my typing because I may type out slang and abbreviation in my essays when I am not fully concentrate. However, I will not intend to put these things in my essays.
